What is Esophageal Dilation?

Esophageal Dilation is the medical procedure of stretching or widening the narrowed sections of the Esophagus.

The purpose of Esophageal Dilation

The esophagus transfer foods from the mouth to the stomach. Dilation will be a good option in the cases of an esophageal stricture (narrowing of the esophagus when there is a buildup of scar tissues) and the most common source behind esophageal damage is “Acid reflux”, which is also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD.

Symptoms -
  • Heartburn
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Regurgitation
  • Hiccups
  • Weight loss

How is it performed?

Doctors can use various techniques for the dilation process, but mostly, a scope is used to stretch the narrowed part which makes it easier to swallow food and liquid.

Your doctor might perform this dilation procedure as part of a sedated endoscopy.
