What Is Fatty Liver?

Fatty liver is a condition related to the accumulation of excess fat in the liver cells. This can lead to liver inflammation and impair liver function, potentially progressing to more severe liver disease if left untreated.

What Causes Fatty Liver?

  • Obesity or overweight
  • Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
  • High levels of triglycerides in the blood (hypertriglyceridemia)
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Certain medications (such as corticosteroids, tamoxifen, or methotrexate)
  • Poor diet high in sugars, refined carbohydrates, and saturated fats
  • Hepatitis C infection
  • Genetic predisposition

What Are the Symptoms of Fatty Liver?

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Abdominal discomfort or pain in the upper right side
  • Enlarged liver (hepatomegaly)
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Swelling in the abdomen (ascites) or legs (edema)
  • Elevated liver enzymes in blood tests
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating (hepatic encephalopathy)
